Our History

Welcome to Hillcrest Bowling Club, a cherished establishment with a history that dates back to the early 20th century. Situated in the picturesque district known as 'Hill Crest' in Sowerby Bridge, our club stands as a testament to the vision and dedication of a group of business and professional individuals.

The Birth of Hillcrest

In the early 1900s, this part of the district witnessed significant development, thanks to the efforts of prominent builders like Messrs Helliwell and Shaw of Burnley Road, and Mr. George F. Wright of Hollins Bank. The construction of private houses transformed the landscape, nearly saturating the available space. With only three sections of land remaining undeveloped, a visionary group of men conceived the idea of creating a bowling green.

In the spring of 1911, Messrs J.K. Helliwell and Thomas Shaw, along with Mr. G.F. Wright, jointly purchased the plot of land on which the bowling green and pavilion now proudly stand. This marked the beginning of a journey towards establishing a vibrant bowling club in the heart of Sowerby Bridge.

A Journey to Inauguration

The subsequent years saw concerted efforts to raise the necessary capital for the land and buildings. Finally, in the year 1913, Hillcrest Bowling Club opened its doors to enthusiasts and became a cherished part of the local community.

Expansion and Growth

In 1919, the club acquired additional land at the rear of the pavilion. Although initially envisioned as a miniature bowling green, plans shifted with the realization that the space could be more effectively utilized as a parking area. This foresight has proven invaluable, providing convenience for members and guests.

Sporting Excellence

During the bowling season, Hillcrest Bowling Club springs to life with:

- Seven competitive evening teams in local leagues
- Two veteran's afternoon teams
- One dedicated ladies team

Throughout the year, we organize approximately 18 internal competitions, spanning Bowling, Darts, and Snooker, offering opportunities for members to showcase their skills and enjoy friendly competition. Even in the winter months, the club continues its active engagement, fielding two snooker teams in the local Calder Valley League.

At Hillcrest Bowling Club, we celebrate a legacy of community, competition, and camaraderie. Join us in being a part of this storied tradition. For inquiries or more information, please Contact us.
